What is the Difference Between Assisted Living and Nursing Home Care?

What is the Difference Between Assisted Living and Nursing Home Care?
February 25, 2021

When referring to senior living communities, people often use the terms  "assisted living" and "nursing home care" interchangeably. However, the two options are actually quite different, reflecting varying levels of needs services. By understanding how assisted living and nursing home care differ, you or your loved one can make a more informed decision to maximize quality of life.

Assisted Living

Many seniors find themselves in an awkward "in between" spot, in which they want to continue enjoying the amenities of independent apartment life but require some individualized care. At an assisted living community like Wedgewood, seniors have access to a 24-hour, on-site licensed nurse who can provide assistance in a private residential suite. Seniors can go about enjoying dining, recreational, and independent activities with the safety and security of knowing any needs for assistance or medical care will be met.

Residents in assisted living normally need little, if any, help with daily activities like bathing and using the restroom, but they also don’t have to concern themselves with the hassles of cleaning, cooking, and laundry. One of the greatest benefits of assisted living is experiencing day-to-day life in the context of an intentionally planned community with a built-in social calendar, activities, and opportunities to develop new friendships.

Nursing Home Care

Nursing homes are communities that offer around-the-clock care for residents who have long-term needs and require regular help with daily activities, like getting in and out of bed, bathing, using the restroom, and getting dressed. While all nursing home facilities have doctors and nurses on site, some may look and feel like medical buildings while others nurture more of a community or neighborhood atmosphere.

Because nursing homes offer 24-hour medical care, their costs can reach almost double that of assisted living communities. However, since nursing homes are regulated by federal laws (as opposed to assisted living facilities, which are handled by the state), Medicare and Medicaid coverage can usually be applied to the bill.

Making the Choice

After determining the extent of care you or your loved one needs, take the time to tour a number of facilities and compare details. Location, cost, range of services and activities, and the ability to "age in place," or transition through levels of care when needed should be considered. Wedgewood Estates offers Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Extended Care options, all of which are staffed with compassionate, highly qualified professionals offering personalized care with the comforts of home.
